10-05-05 Wednesday Update

Please review the General Notes from last week’s, 9-29-05 Rehearsal Notes. When the Music Notes portion was posted, there were also quite a few additions and changes made throughout the General Notes portion. Some of the changes under Weekly Band Practice were about labeling belongings, the need to "tune" instruments at band practice and emphasis on introducing yourself to attendance takers. There was also new information about Cadet Band, Performance sign-ups, Booster positions needing filling, and more.

To help you in planning, the Wheaton Light-Up parade usually steps off around 6pm, but we do not have a definite time as of yet.

In addition to the washboards, thimbles and jugs asked for in last week’s notes, we may also need a large, old-fashioned, metal washtub or two. Please email the director if you have one available to use.

In last week’s music notes it was recommended that students practice using a metronome. Over the next few weeks, we plan on providing a list of tempos for every song. In the meantime, please set your metronome somewhere in the range of the tempo specified for each song. Remember to watch for tempo changes within each piece.

Those who have rented instruments need to turn in their rental agreements and pay their rental fees.

Some cadet parents have asked about what the "uniform" dress is. It is the same as it is for the other levels of band when performing for an audience:

White, woven, long-sleeved, button-down dress shirt with collar, which must be buttoned all the way up to the neck, to accomodate bow ties. No knits, pullovers, turtlenecks or mocks, nor tight-fitting shirts will be allowed.
Conservative, black dress pants. No jeans or Capri-style pants.
Girls have the option of wearing a conservative, modest below the knee or longer skirt, with only small slits if necessary. No denim or leather.
Black dress socks. (Girls wearing skirts should wear flesh-colored hosiery.)
Black dress shoes of a conservative style, with a low heel and sole. No sandals or boots.
Red bow ties (if wearing, band provides)
Red cummerbunds (if wearing, band provides)
Jewelry should be limited to a wristwatch, small rings (so they cannot be seen by the audience), and small earrings (less than one-half inch in diameter). Boys are not allowed to wear earrings.
Any hair accessories such as barrettes or headbands may be solid red or white, or must match the student’s hair color.
Please, no outstanding makeup, nail colors, hairstyles, or trendy fashions that would attract attention to a student’s appearance over that of the band as a whole.

The band director reserves the right to deny students participation in a performance due to inappropriate dress.
