GENERAL NOTES

REGARDING MEMBER’S NEWS
It is the band member’s and/or parent’s responsibility to check the website for the most current information. It is our primary means of communication to both students and their parents. The Member’s News tab is where you will find each week’s Rehearsal Notes. If there is anything that was missed or something else needing communication prior to the next Thursday’s practice, there will also be a Wednesday Update. If there is no need, there will not be a Wednesday Update. All past Rehearsal Notes and Wednesday Updates can be accessed through the Rehearsal Notes Archive on the Forms/Documents page.

In the event the webmaster is going to be unavailable to update the website, which is an infrequent occurrence, we will try to alert you to that fact in advance. If necessary, we will use email as a back-up means of communication.

The format for Rehearsal Notes is usually; General Notes for all band members and/or parents, which may include things like upcoming performance details, Booster needs/information, and other news or reminders. Specific directions spelled-out for each of the four band levels follow the General Notes. There will be a list of the songs to practice over the week, along with any passages needing special attention. The director may also include the order in which the songs are planned to be played at the next Thursday’s practice. It saves time at practice if everyone has his or her music in order.

As we continue to revise the website, we encourage you to submit any questions, comments or suggestions to the webmaster with "Web Comments" as the subject.

*****CADET BAND REMAINS OPEN*****
Please let your home school support groups and home school friends know that we are still accepting beginners in the Cadet Band. The other band levels are closed. It is critical that the size of the Cadet Band increase. There needs to be enough new students now, so they will be ready to move up to higher levels in the future as other students age out and move on. If you know of interested parties, please have them contact us ASAP.

WEEKLY BAND PRACTICE
Note - Even though this band practice information was sent out in an email, we are including in this week’s Rehearsal Notes.

As in years past, we will meet in Cornelius Hall at Resurrection Church, Wayne, IL (NW corner of Route 59 & Army Trail Road). Below is the timetable for the entire evening. All students need to arrive early enough to prepare their instruments, stands and music so they will be ready to begin playing promptly at the designated time for their band. All musicians should remember to bring a sharpened pencil for making light notations on their music, which are originals. Nothing other than pencil markings are to be made on the original music and the quantity of marks should be kept to a bare minimum.

5:00-5:30 (approx.) – take down hall/set-up for practice
5:30-6:00 – Cadet Band
6:05-6:55 – Concert Junior Band
7-7:55 – Concert Senior Band
8-9:00 – Symphonic Band
9-9:30 – reset hall

Note: All percussionists and their parents should review pages 10, 11 and 12 in the 2005-2006 WSHSB Members Information, for somewhat different and more specific arrival times, percussion supply list and general rules for their section. Any questions should be directed to Mrs. Beth Pfauth, whose contact information is also on page 12.

Every week, wind musicians need to bring to rehearsal:
a sharpened pencil, their completed Practice Form (not for 9/29), instrument, stand and music in folders, plus the following books:
CADETS - Essential Elements 2000 Book 1, "Gold Book", Winning Rhythms
CONCERT JR - Essential Elements 2000 Book 1 "Gold Book" and Book 2 "Red Book", Winning
Rhythms
CONCERT SR - Essential Elements 2000 Book 2 "Red Book", Winning Rhythms
SYMPHONIC - Unisonal Scales, Chords and Rhythmic Studies for Band

LABEL ALL YOUR BELONGINGS. We already have items in the lost and found. This would not happen if everyone would label the supplies brought to band. Things to label include all parts to your music stands including the carrying case, all you own books, and refillable water bottles, to name a few. These are some of the items left after practice most frequently.

IMPORTANT – For the first three weeks or so, all students (new and returning) should have their first and last names clearly and boldly printed on a 3x5 index card and safety pinned to their shirt. Even though Mrs. Borow or Mrs. Wiesner-Pardee may know your name, the parents taking attendance, or helping in other ways, may not. Please introduce yourself to the attendance takers, who will be wearing pink nametags.

Be sure to check your file folder at the front table every week, for any music or other papers that are there for you.

After you arrive and get your instrument out, you need to "tune" your instrument using your own tuner or one at the front table. This applies to all students, but is especially important for the saxes and clarinets in Concert Sr.

Remember that we are only allowed to use Cornelius Hall. No one should be loitering in the hallway or stairwell, nor be outside in the parking lot, other than going to and from your car.

NEW PRACTICE REPORT
Please see Forms/Documents for the newly revised WSHSB PRACTICE REPORT. All band members, wind and percussion, are to use this form for reporting each week’s practice, throughout the year. There is no longer a separate percussion practice sheet.

WSHSB CALENDAR FOR 2005-2006
Click Calendar, or tab above, and take some time to look over the new 2005-2006 WSHSB Calendar. Note important dates on your home calendars. Please advise the director, via email, of any conflicts as soon as you are aware of them.

CARING FOR WSHSB MUSIC
Since the music you are receiving is originals, extra care must be taken to preserve it. We cannot stress this enough. Some of the arrangements we use, are now permanently out of print, which makes them all the more valuable. Storing your music in its folder, making sure there are no edges hanging out, is a good start. Music is not to be defaced, dog-eared, or torn, and should be kept from getting wet from spills or rain. Keep your music in a safe place, not where younger siblings may get to it. There is a fine of $4 per song, for damaged (in our judgement) or lost music.

MUSIC RESOURCE PAGE
Formerly called the Music Library page, the Music Resource page has the complete lists of 2005-2006 Winter Trimester sheet music for each band, including audio links where available. In some cases, the link may be to a clip, rather than the complete song, but at least you will get a taste of the music. It will greatly aid your personal progress and mastery if you play along with these links in your daily practice. Of course, it will probably take a while until you are able to play at the tempo of the recording. You will find just listening to the music frequently, apart from your practice time, will improve your ability to learn and play the song. Follow instructions on the resource page for saving the files to your computer.

Unfortunately, there are not as many links available this trimester. If the exact same arrangement of a song is not available, occasionally we may provide a link to a version different from the one we are using. In this case, while you will not be able to play along, you can listen to get a feel for the music.

Please note you do not currently have music for all the songs on the list. Music distribution will continue over the coming weeks. Be sure to check your folder weekly as mentioned above.

You will notice, four songs appear in all three bands’ lists. The combined bands, at either the beginning or end of our concert, will play these songs.

Click Music Resource, or the tab above, to see music lists.

CHRISTMAS PERFORMANCE SIGN –UP SHEETS
While fall is just beginning, we must already begin planning for the WSHSB Christmas Season Performances. There are two sign-up sheets at the front tables, one for the downtown Wheaton Light-Up Parade on November 25th, the day after Thanksgiving, time TBA, and one for the Yorktown Shopping Center Christmas Performance on Monday evening, December 5th, 7 – 8 pm. Please check your calendars at home, this week, to see if you will be available for either or both of those dates. When you come to practice, put at check after your name, in one of the columns, Yes or No. Do this for both performances, please. You need not have marched before to participate in the Wheaton parade, however in addition to your instrument, you will need to wear a Santa hat. Last year we led the way for Santa, marching and playing in front of his float!

WASHBOARDS, THIMBLES AND JUGS NEEDED
One of the songs we are playing this trimester requires some sounds from items we do not have. We need minimally, three old-fashioned washboards and at least 12 thimbles to "play" them with. The same song also calls for blowing into old-fashioned jugs. A couple jugs may be enough. Please email the director and let her know if you can provide any of these items. Please, put your name on the item, and bring it to practice.

BAND BOOSTERS
Parents if you have not already committed to helping the band with your time and/or talent please visit the Band Boosters page and contact Helen with how you can be of assistance. We need all parents to be involved. If you wish to see Helen in person, most weeks she is at the front table with sign-up sheets for the different tasks/jobs which remain open. "Many hands make light the work." Thank you to all who are helping to get this year off to a great start!

We still need:
– One more family to assist with set-up on Team 4, from 5 –- 5:30, Oct.20th
– Someone to monitor the parking lot, for safety, from 5:15 – 5:45 each week
– Someone to monitor the parking lot, for safety, from 6:45 – 7:15 each week

MUSIC NOTES
Next week, all members should sit according to their roster order. Seating charts are posted on the poles at band.

Terminology explained: tacit (or tacet) means "don't play";    "solo" means only first chair plays

Now that we've played through many of the songs, you now know what they sound like. It is important that you focus on effective practice sessions at home. Make sure you read the section in the General Notes above, titled MUSIC RESOURCE PAGE.

Strive for accurate notes, even tempo and correct rhythms. It is also highly recommended that you practice using a metronome.
