General News:

On a personal note…. The Borows are dealing with what was thought to be a routine bout of the "cold". However, Ann Borow went into the hospital right before band with a very high fever. She has pneumonia, is back home and on medication. She is resting now, more comfortably. Thank you for calls and other kind expressions. Please keep her (and the rest of the family) in your prayers.

Special thanks to our Guest Conductor for the rehearsal, Mr. Borow. Thanks to everyone for their cooperation and diligence.

Home Educators’ Conference:

Please continue practicing the songs distributed for this event, as well as all the band music. The line-up will be posted on Wednesday. We will try again next week to practice the songs as an ensemble.

Marching Dates:

Inquiries have been received regarding marching band camp and parade dates. While nothing has yet been confirmed, a list will be posted (hopefully by Wednesday) of all the marching dates that Mrs. Borow has been contacted about. She will also put together a poll sheet, to get an idea of who is interested in which parades, so that she can have an idea of which commitments the Patriot Marching Band should might take on. While nothing will be final on this sheet, she needs some kind of an idea of numbers in order to decide about these dates. Invitations were receieved as early as January and some of the parades have deadlines as early as the end of March.

Music Notes:

The line-up for next week will be posted in the Wednesday additions.

Now that the SEC is over, and the EE1 book is completed, all students are being asked to increase their practice times and focus on the trimester band music.

Regarding our current band songs, the following needs the most attention from our members:

NOTE/RHYTHM accuracy on all songs. Play slowly and check everything.
Please work on EXACTNESS. For example, all quarter notes should be held out for the same duration – not longer, not shorter. This is lacking in our ensemble (playing together). Listen carefully to the CD from last trimester and you will be able to hear people coming in at different times or holding notes longer or shorter. This needs to be corrected so that we play more precisely, accurately and TOGETHER, as a unit.
Accurate dynamics with increased, audible dynamic range in your playing.
Articulation (note attack with or without tonguing). Watch the slurs and phrasing. There should be no tonguing except the first note of those under a slur or phrase. Staccatos should be shorter and more separated. Accents must be played with more force.
Tuning (intonation) – please tune before you play. Again, if you own a tuner, keep it out WHILE you practice at home, to see how you come in and out of tune. While playing, don’t adjust the instrument. Adjust your embouchure to get the instrument in tune for that particular note.

We held a timing session last week, and it appears that a few songs might need to be cut, in order to keep the concert at a reasonable length. The quality and potential of all songs will be closely evaluated over the coming weeks. Again, please put more time in this week and focus on the points above, so that all songs can be best represented over the next few weeks.

That’s about it for this Friday. Please check back again on Wednesday, when the rest information will hopefully included in the additions. Thank you.
