GENERAL NOTES
ATTENTION LIGHT-UP PARADE PARTICIPANTS
This item applies only to band members who will be participating in the November 27th, Wheaton Light-Up parade.

For the three practice dates in November, the 3rd, 10th, and the 17th, Concert Junior members, will need to stay about ten minutes later, into the beginning of Concert Senior practice. All Concert Senior members need to arrive a little early, to be set-up and ready to play at 7pm sharp! Symphonic members will be part of the practice only on November 17th. On that day, those Symphonic members will need to arrive an hour early, so they can join the parade practice at 7pm sharp, as well.

All those participating will need to bring their lyre and flip folder to practice. If space permits, we will practice in our marching block formation. Otherwise, you will stand in the area we normally practice in, as near as possible to your instrument section.

PAMPERED CHEF FUND RAISER
Thank you to all the parents who took the time and stopped in at band to learn more about the WSHSB Pampered Chef Fund Raiser. There was a packet of information for every family, complete with fundraiser guidelines, catalogs and order forms. If you did not pick one up, please check with your student(s) to see if they brought the packet home for you. Otherwise, you or your student should pick up your packet at band, next week, November 3rd, from band parent and fundraiser organizer, Mrs. Dawn Olson. That still gives you two weeks until all orders are due. In the meantime, you and your potential customers can visit
www.pamperchef.biz/julietullis to view the catalog online.

As an added incentive, a $50 gift certificate to the winner’s choice of restaurant will be awarded to the family whose total amount of orders is the greatest over $150. Julie Tullis, our Kitchen Consultant, personally will give the award, when the orders arrive.

All orders, with payment, must be turned into Dawn Olson on Thursday, November 17, in your manila envelope with any extra catalogs and/or orders forms included. Be sure your family’s name is on the outside of the envelope for the contest.

SECTIONALS ANYONE?
A couple opportunities for band sectionals have presented themselves. A different location and several times slots are available to us outside of our regular Thursday practice. Both dates are Mondays in weeks that we do not have a regular, Thursday practice. You may sign-up for one or both.
Place: Music & Arts Center, 1512 N Naper Blvd, Suite 180, Naperville, IL, phone 630-577-0820
This is the NE corner of N Naper Blvd and Ogden Ave
Dates: Monday, November 21st, the week of Thanksgiving
Monday, April 11th, during Holy Week
Times: 12-1pm Concert Junior, 1-2 pm Concert Senior, 2-3 pm Symphonic
For each time-period, there will be three rooms available, one room each, for brass, woodwind and percussion.

There are sign-up sheets available at the front table for Concert Junior, Concert Senior and Symphonic. We need to know how many students are interested and available to participate on either/both of the dates. Once again, we ask that students indicate their choice by checking "Yes" or "No" on the sign-up sheet for their band level. Do this for both dates. If there are not sufficient, available, participants signed-up (for November 21st) by the end of practice on November 10th, we will not hold the November group of sectionals.

CHRISTMAS PERFORMANCE SIGN –UP SHEETS
If you have not yet checked your name off the sign-ups for the Wheaton Light–Up Parade and the Yorktown Performance, please do so ASAP. We need everyone to put a check after their name, in one of the columns, Yes or No, for both performances. Check earlier notes for more complete info.

SOLO AND ENSEMBLE CONTEST (SEC)
If you have looked at the calendar, you have seen that the 5th Annual WSHSB Solo and Ensemble Contest is scheduled for Saturday, March 18th, from 10 am until 2 pm. Once again, the location is the Lutheran Church of the Master, Carol Stream, IL. Put the date on your calendar now. Students, it is never too early to start looking for that perfect solo music or to think about getting a group together for an ensemble. Over the coming weeks we will continue to share information, including tips and guidelines, for the SEC. Parents, be sure to read the Booster item below and consider volunteering for a task to help get this year’s SEC on its way.

What is the SEC?

The SEC is an exciting musical event, much anticipated by all participating students and the directors. It is an opportunity for students to works on solos, and /or ensembles of their choice. Ensembles are songs preformed by more than one student, such as duets, trios, quartets, etc. Each student or ensemble, strives for their personal best. It is not a competition. Adjudicators are hired by the band to judge each event. The director has full authority over the schedule for the day, which is posted in advance.

LOST AND FOUND, LAST CALL
We would appreciate it if parents would come into the band room and take a few moments to look over the items currently in our Lost and Found. Things like coolers from the picnic would be recognizable to parents but not necessarily to their children. If band parents do not come into the band room, they do not know what we have. Mrs. Wiesner-Pardee will be giving items away if they are not claimed soon.

BAND BOOSTERS
We would like to set up some support next month, to assist students in planning for the Solo and Ensemble Contest. Many stores sell music at different ability levels. If you have a resource that might assist another student as they look through catalogs, please label it and bring it to practice for display on a "reference table." We would also like to start a sign-up sheet for students wishing to connect with others, to form a duet, trio, or small ensemble. Please contact Helen Herbst at band, or email her at volunteer@wshsb.com, if you can help the following –

Assist students wishing help forming an ensemble.
Staff the reference table during practice.

Nov. 3 Practice Set Up is Team 2 – Ascenzo, Levander, and St. Charles Karas families. Thank you!

MUSIC NOTES

TIPS FOR ALL, TO HELP YOU IMPROVE

In general, everyone should strive for a stronger, more consistent airflow while playing. By improving breath support, tonal clarity will increase.
The extremes in dynamics are sorely underused. Most players are what might be called mf performers. Soft playing requires solid breath support. Conscientious players, who practice at the p level, will achieve a greater resonance and clarity in quiet passages. This is very important for all players.
